Potassium nitrate is a water-soluble inorganic salt that is commonly used as nitrogen fertilizer. It is also found in toothpastes as a desensitizer for tooth hypersensitivity. The addition of KNO3 to growth medium has shown to promote growth in salt stressed melon plants.

Potassium nitrate may be used in the synthesis of 5-bromo-8-nitroisoquinoline via bromination of isoquinoline using N-bromosuccinimide.

Used in pyrotechnics, explosives, matches, and specialty fertilizers. Other uses include modifying tobacco, glass manufacturing, metallurgy, solid rocket propellants and preservatives.

A source of potassium and nitrogen (NPK 13-0-44), both vital for leaf, stem and root growth as well as disease resistance. It is applied as a solution in water to plants in soil and aquariums.
