A non-essential, optically inactive, non-chiral amino acid. It is the smallest of the 20 natural amino acids. Acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, particularly in brain stem and medulla. Shown to block NMDA-stimulated dopamine release in fetal mesencephalic cell cultures. Also reported to increase NMDA-receptor mediated synaptic potential in cortical neurons.

Uses

Schizophrenia. Taking glycine by mouth along with some antipsychotic drugs seems to reduce certain symptoms, called negative symptoms, in some people who don’t respond to treatment with conventional drugs. But it’s not clear if glycine is helpful in people who are taking newer medications, such as clozapine.
